We all hear about how climate change is affecting and changing the way wineries and vineyards must think to combat it. One example, as recently reported, is the case of Chandon in Yountville, California.
This harvest season, Chandon achieved a historic milestone by beginning its 2026 sparkling harvest in July — the earliest in the winery’s 53-year history — driven by an unseasonably warm March and wet spring in Napa Valley. Winemaker Pauline Lhote reported that, despite a challenging and variable season, the early harvest yielded high-quality Chardonnay from the Yountville estate.
The season saw a 15–20% reduction in anticipated yields due to smaller cluster sizes, yet the crop remained hardy thanks to regenerative farming practices and renewed sustainability efforts.

In the vineyard, canopy management is being rethought — leaving more shading leaves over exposed fruit zones, orienting rows to limit afternoon sun, and deploying shade cloth to protect clusters from sunburn during heat spikes. Irrigation is shifting from calendar-based schedules to precision, sensor-driven watering that delivers water only when soil-moisture and vine-stress data call for it, stretching an increasingly scarce resource.
Below ground, regenerative farming — cover cropping, composting, reduced tillage, and no-till practices — builds soil organic matter that holds water longer and buffers vines against heat and drought. And in a longer-horizon bet, some growers are rethinking varietal selection entirely, trialing heat- and drought-tolerant grapes suited to warmer Mediterranean and Iberian climates — Grenache, Mourvèdre, Vermentino, Assyrtiko, and Tempranillo among them — as insurance against a future in which cool-climate benchmarks like Pinot Noir grow harder to ripen in balance.
