Award-Winning Winemaking with Wine Experts & Friends

I began to learn about winemaking in my home state of New York, long before NY wines became known for California’s quality – and even though wines have been around the state for many years. My winemaking schooling began with my good friend, Rich Pisacano, owner of Roanoke Vineyard in the North Fork of Long Island. My wife and I would also attend endless wine education events, and I learned from many of the best, like Rich, including Roman Roth of Wölffer Estate Vineyard, who created The Grapes of Roth, which made Wine Spectator’s top 100 list.My winemaking education continued with more hands-on creations when my family and I migrated to Southern California. It is here that I connected with Red Door Vineyard and met wine experts and wine enthusiasts who find immense joy in the art of winemaking. Together, we harvested, crushed, pressed, fermented, aged and bottled wines season after season.Overall, I have learned that winemaking is a deeply rewarding process that combines science, creativity, and passion. From selecting the perfect grapes to monitoring fermentation and aging, every step is a labor of love that culminates in a beautiful bottle of wine. The process of winemaking also fosters a sense of community and camaraderie. Whether working in a commercial winery or in a home cellar, winemakers often come together to share knowledge, resources, and of course, the fruits of their labor. Tasting and discussing wines with fellow enthusiasts creates a sense of belonging and mutual appreciation for the craft.

I have made great friends and partners this way, and I continue to learn even more through mentors like Vince Castellana of Castellana Wines. His winemaking is a form of alchemy, transforming humble grapes into complex and nuanced beverages that tell a story of its origins. I see his level of creativity and personal enjoyment as he fulfills his passion for wine. He and I have come together to build wine rooms and discuss wine creation, labeling and tastings from hard labor, with friends.Winemaking truly is a blend of artistry, science, nature, and love – as I have witnessed and participated in with Vince and other friends like Joe Hajost of Early Bird Wines and Mark Serjak, owner of Baxter Ridge Vineyards. And it would be impossible not to mention Steve Stephens of Red Door Vineyards who paved the way for me and Red Door Vineyards. Check out their stuff. You are sure to enjoy wine from those who fiercely enjoy the craft and seek to have a space in the world of wine!
